A digital “captain’s log” to commemorate my partner’s first sailing journey aboard this historic all-wooden sailboat. Experimentation with scrolling as the sole input method was a fun challenge in elegant interaction design. Integrating 3D animation and vector maps with my own poetry opened new ways for me to tell the story of this journey.

A big challenge was ensuring a small, fast–loading file while retaining the intricate animation of the sails and water. By morphing the model using combinations of cyclical motions, I could keep the the animation loop compact while keeping a random-like effect.

This ship has likely sailed over a million kilometers across its countless routes — but I wanted to commemorate this particular journey and the navigation skills my partner learned onboard.
Built in 1912, the ship is now fitted with GPS and is trackable by anybody with access to VesselFinder.com, a public ship tracking tool.
